Karen Tarnow named her human book: Improvise, Adapt and Overcome - A story of empowerment. And this was for good reason.

When there were no trusted adults in her life to help her learn about her lesbian identity, she improvised and found herself on Pearl Street being nurtured by those who allowed her to own who she was.

When she was fired for being gay and had to leave behind the criminal justice career she was passionate about, she adapted by pouring herself into another profession in a workplace that allowed her to be authentic.

And she overcame the intense fear and internalized pain from enduring and witnessing incessant violence committed by her adoptive father toward her adoptive mother.

Intentionally moving through these and more of her lived experiences, enabled Karen to find the wholeness and self awareness to be the empowered woman she is today.
